It is the plum(梅) season in Japan. You may have seen red umeboshi (梅干し), pickled plums colored by red shiso (紫蘇) herb. Plums are green about this time of the year and many people prepare plums to make umeboshi pickles, umeshu liquor and so on. Supermarkets often sell plums, sugar cubes and jars as a set for customers. At home, I made plum vinegar. All I had to do was put plums, sugar cubes and vinegar in a jar. It will be ready in a month or so when sugar is melted completely. I usually drink the plum flavored vinegar with soda. It is such a refreshing drink during the humid summer. The drink contains citric acid which is said to help prevent dehydration. I also made plum jam this year that I eat as yogurt sauce for breakfast. It perks me up with its combination of sweetness and sourness. It is getting hot and humid, yet cool at night. Don't catch a cold like me!
