It is so hot and humid here in Saga but I hope you are surviving, dear readers.
The Tokyo Olympic Games will begin from tomorrow but I have mixed feelings about it like other people in Japan.
First, it is too risky to hold such a big sporting event in the middle of a pandemic with the concern that Tokyo 2020 Games could accelerate the spread of infection.
Second, I don't understand why we have to sacrifice our daily lives for the Games. For example, roads around the venues are shut down and metropolitan expressway users have to pay an additional fee of 1000 yen during the daytime in order to avoid congestion. This doesn't make sense because most games are without spectators. Also, the delivery will be delayed due to the traffic restriction.
Third, the government's decision to host the Games is controversial. The prime minister is saying the Games are safe but we are repeatedly told the shortage of medical resources. How can it be possible?
The gap between the government and ordinary people reminds me of the Second World War where the government didn't inform people of defeat but forced them to keep fighting with a bamboo sword.
Anyway, I would like to welcome warmly and remotely all athletes who have made efforts to participate in the Games, hoping they can make the most of it.
Welcome to Japan and take a very good care of yourselves:)
*The next entry will be in September. Until then, enjoy the summer!
